Geography: Colstrip is surrounded by plains, rocky buttes, and coulees. Castle Rock Lake is located west of town.

Transportation: Colstrip is located in southeast Montana along MT highway 39, about 30 miles south of Forsyth.  Sheridan County Airport is about 81 miles south of Colstrip in Sheridan, Wyoming.  Billings Logan International Airport is approximately 132 miles west of town.

Weather:  Average high temperature in the summer ranges from 78° in June, 87° in July, and 86° in August, with average lows in the high 40s to low 50s.  June usually has the most rainfall with an average of 2.7 inches. The average high temperature in the winter ranges from 37° in December, 34° in January, and 40° in February, with average lows in the single digits to low teens.  The average snowfall in December and January is 6.5  inches.
