Geography: The Milk River flows through town and the Missouri is is a short drive to the south.  The Little Rocky Mountains are located southwest of Malta along Hwy 191. Nelson Reservoir and Lake Bowdoin are just east of town. Lake Bowdoin hosts a National Wildlife Refuge, as well as the  CM Russell National Wildlife Refuge which is a short drive southwest of Malta along Hwy 191.

Transportation: Malta, Montana is located on the Hi-Line, Hwy 2, at the intersection of Highway 191. Billings has the closest full service airport about 182 miles south.

Weather:  Average high temperature in the summer ranges from 77° in June, 86° in July, and 84° in August, with average lows in the low 50s.  June usually has the most rainfall with an average of 3.13 inches. The average high temperature in the winter ranges from 28° in December, 22° in January, and 27° in February, with average lows in the single digits.  The average snowfall in December and January is 3.5  inches.
